Description
The Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) is a rainfall and subsurface runoff simulation model used for long-term (continuous) individual event simulation of the quantity and quality of surface/subsurface hydrology primarily from urban/suburban areas. .
Application in education
The Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) has several educational applications:
Sewer Network Design: SWMM is used in civil engineering education to introduce basic skills for the proper design of urban sewer and drainage systems. An introductory manual for the design of sewer networks using SWMM has been published by the University of A Coruña. This manual is used in teaching activities in the Master in Civil Engineering at the University of A Coruña, as well as in the International Master in Water Engineering.
Drainage system modeling: SWMM is a useful teaching tool to improve learning of the hydrological processes developed in urban sewer and drainage systems1. It can be used to evaluate stormwater control strategies for gray infrastructure, such as pipes and storm drains.
Scholarship Programs: Some organizations offer scholarship programs that subsidize attendance at PCSWMM/EPA SWMM training and the International Conference on Water Management Modeling (ICWMM). These programs also provide academics with easy free access to a PCSWMM subscription and share curricula, online training, video tutorials and other learning resources.
It is important to mention that SWMM is an open source program and can be downloaded for free from the website of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US-EPA.
